Music Booster Report - March 2006

Please excuse my absence from tonight’s meeting, as this is the week of the musical and I am actively involved with preparing the pit orchestra and the singers for their performance this weekend.

The Symphonic Band competed this past weekend at OMEA large group contest and achieved the overall rating of excellent. The students worked very hard in preparation for this event and performed very admirably in the last time slot of the evening on Friday night at contest. Thank you to all of you who attended the performance.

The jazz band is actively rehearsing and preparing for performances that are upcoming in the spring. We have been invited to perform at Vineyard in April, which should be a fun and exciting event for both the students and the residents of the facility.

The band was host to several exciting and fun guest clinicians during the month of February in order to assist us in preparing for contest. Dr. Jason Stumbo and Mr. Carl Collins, both directors of the bands at the University of Toledo, and Mr. Milton Allen from the Ohio State University were in to work with the band. In the coming months, Dr. Barry Kopetz from Capital University will be in to work with the concert band, and Mr. David Sycks, from the Bluffton area, and Dr. Jay Miglia from Capital University will be in to work with the jazz band. All of these individuals have provided a wealth of knowledge to the students and myself, making us more aware of areas of improvement.

The 6th grade band is improving every day, and the students are growing as players each time we meet for rehearsal. Their technique is improving, as is their knowledge and grasp of the concept of instrumental music, and the spring concert looks to be an exciting and fun experience for all of them.

The raincoats are finally here, and were delivered last week to the band room via UPS. I have not yet unpacked them, but will be inspecting each of them in the coming weeks to ensure correctness or workmanship and size. I will also be numbering each one of them and preparing them to be hung on the rack at the end of the room in preparation for the use next year. Thank you for your generous donation of them for the students to use next year.

This concludes my report for this evening. I respectfully submit it.

Director’s Report

Orchestra

On March 4, 2006 the Port Clinton High School String Orchestra participated in the OMEA State Orchestra Competition for the NW region hosted by Sandusky High School.

Selections played were Overture to Lucio Silla by Mozart, 2 movements from Moussorgsky’s Pictures At An Exhibition (Promenade/Great Gate of Kiev) and M to the Third Power by Nunez.

This year, the orchestra move dup from class C to class B and received straight II’s on the floor and sight-reading which gave us a II as our final rating. The judging was fair, consistent, accurate and positive. Students prepared diligently, played extremely well, and I am very happy with their efforts. I’m also pleased with the challenge they took upon themselves and the rating that was given. Thanks go to the many Port Clinton Orchestra parents, music faculty and administration that came out in support of our competitive event.

Middle school orchestra students will be performing March 25 at Western Reserve HS for solo and ensemble contest. This year’s entries include 4 solos, 5 duets, and 2 quartets with a total of 17 students participating. Again the level of preparation is very good and students continue to work hard. Best of luck to our middle school string players on the 25th.

Respectfully submitted,

Brian Stitak
